Membership What are the benefits of joining the Mitchell PTA?The Mitchell Mustangs PTA is a great way to be involved and stay connected to school activities and events. Some of the benefits include: • Supporting your child's school• Opportunities to volunteer • Email notification of events and activities• Membership in the Texas PTA, the largest child advocacy group in Texas• Student directory with membership• Custom Mitchell note pad and penUltimately, PTA provides the opportunity to serve, to volunteer and to contribute to the welfare of all children. By joining, you will not only have an impact in your local school community, but through the larger Texas PTA, you will have input in major legislative and policy issues affecting children throughout the state. In addition, your membership entitles you to discounts from major business sponsors such as Dell Computers, Southwest Airlines, and Barnes and Noble to name a few. For Texas PTA check out their website at www.txpta.org. What does the PTA do?The Mitchell PTA has many functions. Below are some of the events and activities we run with the invaluable help of our many volunteers.• Organize and pay for all field trips, including transportation• Raise funds through our one and only Cookie Dough Fundraiser in the fall• Organize two annual Student Socials per grade• Coordinate volunteers for the Copy Room, Band, Orchestra and Fine Arts• Organize, design and sell Mitchell T-shirts and spirit wear• Organize and distribute school supplies• Maintain Challenge Course for Teamworks• Fund student curriculum enhancement, i.e. Renzulli Learning Systems• Fund staff development seminarsThe Mitchell PTA funds, staffs and supports all of the above and much more. A strong PTA benefits all involved-students, teachers and parents alike. How much does it cost to join the PTA?Purchase the basic PTA Family Membership for $25:– includes a Mitchell Student Directory, National PTA Membership Benefits, NEW Car Decal- it’s a cling!, and “Note from Home” Notepad with Mitchell pen.Friends of MitchellFriends of Mitchell is a way for you to support your child’s education. You may be thinking, “If we participate in all of the fundraiser’s throughout the year, why would we have to make an additional monetary donation to the school?” That is a great question! We offer several ways to raise funds, because we do not expect you to participate in 100% of our fundraisers. When you make a direct donation into Friends of Mitchell there are no expenses, so 100% of your effort goes directly into the programs for your children. The mission of the Mitchell Intermediate PTA, in common with those of the National and State PTA, are:

• To promote the welfare of children in home, school and community.

• To foster the relationship between home and school.

• To unite efforts for securing the highest advantages in physical, mental, and social

education for children.

The Texas PTA Mission:

Welcome Greetings Parents,On behalf of the Mitchell PTA Board, I would like to welcome all of our new 5th and 6th grade families and returning 6th grade families to Mitchell Intermediate. We are looking forward to a fantastic year for our Mustangs! Thank you for visiting our website. We know you will find this website a useful tool to keep you informed of PTA activities and events throughout the year. You will be able to purchase everything the PTA is offering. This includes PTA membership, directories, T-Shirts, yearbook, and tickets to the 5th and 6th grade socials. We have continued to make improvements to our website in order to make online transactions easy, as well as a vehicle to provide valuable, timely information to our members. We hope to streamline purchases, reduce paper costs and waste, eliminate lost checks and orders, and increase efficiency for our members. All purchase transactions will be done online ONLY. The Go Green Initiative is a simple, comprehensive program designed to create a culture of environmental responsibility on school campuses across the nation. We encourage all parents to place orders online. It's secure, easy and provides a receipt for your records. Be sure to bookmark this site. Committees MEMBERSHIP The membership committee handles all PTA member business at the local and state level. Our one stop shop site allows for purchasing everything you will need for the year, from Yearbooks and Social Tickets to PTA Membership. Monies raised through Membership go directly back into the school to purchase items not covered in our school budget.COOKIE DOUGH The fundraising for Mitchell Intermediate is accomplished through our one and only Cookie Dough Fundraiser kicking off early September. Volunteers are mostly needed in October for processing orders (three/four days) and in November for delivery day (one day). FALL / SPRING SOCIALS Each fall and spring, the Mitchell PTA hosts 5th grade and 6th grade indoor carnivals in conjunction with each Learning Community (LC). Each LC runs a booth staffed by LC parent volunteers. Prizes such as candy and trinkets are donated by the parents from the LC. Admission and tickets can be purchased online for these events. These typically take place on a Friday, immediately after school from 4-6 pm in the Mitchell Commons.Volunteers requests are made by the LC room parents several weeks before each social.If you would like to help out, please fill out the volunteer form and select your child's grade level SOCIAL under Committees. This is typically a 30 to 60 minute shift commitment. ENVIRONMENTALThe Environmental Committee (formerly Recycling) helps coordinate a school wide recycling program and overall environmental awareness promoting earth-friendly behaviors throughout our campus in partnership with parents, students, teachers and administrators.The Mitchell PTA is part of the Go Green Initiative (GGI) the world's fastest growing fully comprehensive environmental action plan for schools. By promoting environmental stewardship on campuses from preschools through universities, the GGI works to involve families, businesses and local governments in the common goal of protecting human health. Since its inception in July 2002, the Go Green Initiative has been endorsed by the National School Boards Association, National Recycling Coalition, adopted by nine State PTA Boards, implemented in all 50 U.S. states, 14 countries and on 4 continents. Together, we can make a difference recycling paper, E-waste, aluminum cans and developing plastic recycling on campus.FOUND IT FRIDAY This committee is charged with displaying all Lost and Found items on Friday during the lunch hour for students to claim their belongings.HEALTH AND SAFETYThe Health and Safety Committee assists the school nurse with yearly health assessments and immunization clinics. This committee typically helps for a period of approximately two weeks during health assessments. Volunteers are scheduled at different times throughout this period. This committee also works with the school counselors during Drug Awareness Month (Red Ribbon Week).HOSPITALITYThe Hospitality Committee provides refreshments for the monthly PTA meetings and light snacks/desserts for the two General PTA meetings.JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT The Junior Achievement (JA) chair coordinates volunteers for (this) a one day seminar for students. JA in a day.Junior Achievement of Southeast Texas is passionate people inspiring kids to learn the economics of life through free enterprise education. JA enables caring adults to share their experience with students to show them what it takes to be successful. The business and economics programs are for students in kindergarten through grade 12. The dynamic interaction between the volunteer and the students promotes active learning and brings economic theory to life.JA's unique approach integrates program materials, trainings, and support. JA is the successful bridge between education and business.Visit houston.ja.org to learn more about Junior Achievement.LANDSCAPING The landscaping committee is in charge of school beautification. They maintain all the flowerpots and plants around the school and periodically weed and mulch flowerbeds. VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR Organizes the ONLINE Volunteer Forms into lists for each committee or activity and distributes to chairpersons. Works with various committees and departments in need of volunteer assistance. STUDENT DIRECTORY The directory committee assembles the student directory, which lists the student’s name, address, e-mail address, LC, and phone number. Information for the directory comes directly from the Online Student Registration required by administration. Volunteers enter data, proofread and distribute the student directories. Work on this committee runs from August through October.STUDENT ENRICHMENT The Student Enrichment Committee supports the principal and staff by making all arrangements for student enrichment programs and field trips for the year.Examples of field trips scheduled in the past are visits to the Ball Metal Recycling Plant, where they recycle aluminum and make soda cans. 6th Graders typically visit the Houston Museum of Natural History where they take part in the Mission to Mars Expedition.T-SHIRTSThis committee designs and sells all spirit wear to the student/parent body. STAFF APPRECIATION Staff Appreciation Committee provides monthly luncheons for the teachers and staff. Each month, the committee sets the menu or theme for the luncheon and volunteers cook or bake items and deliver to the school. Many volunteers are needed for this committee.YEARBOOK The Yearbook Committee handles all aspects of publishing the yearbook. Many volunteers are needed for • Taking photos of activities and events throughout the year• Uploading photos to the yearbook website • Volunteers to create pages, proofread• Flyer distribution for yearbook sales• Managing Online Orders• Distributing final copiesMost work is done online, a meeting will be held shortly after school begins to review page creation and photo upload.

FAQ What volunteer opportunities are available at Mitchell?Mitchell Intermediate NEEDS its many volunteers to assist in all areas. From copy room to textbook distribution, chaperoning field trips to room parents and staff appreciation, many hands are needed to ensure our teachers, staff and students have the support they need to conduct the business of educating. To find out where you can help, please visit the Student Directory and Volunteer (PALS) form. Please visit our COMMITTTEES page for a description of the various committees. Or, you can fill out the Student Directory and Volunteer (PALS) form that you will get on the first day of school. Where can I purchase T-shirts, etc?Purchases may be made at the online Spirit Store or during "Meet the Teacher" night. Online orders will be delivered to your child's LC. What is an LC (Learning Community)?This is an informal description of Learning Communities At Mitchell Intermediate, students are placed in Learning Communities (LC), which consist of approximately 100-125 students in 4-6 homerooms. While all LC's are learning the same subject matter for their particular grade, each LC has its own identity and functions independently from other LC's. This system has proven to be very successful in integrating our feeder schools- Buckalew, Bush, Galatas, Powell, Coulson Tough and Deretchin. Each LC has a math teacher, science teacher, and two language arts/social studies teachers and a science lab. Students "loop", meaning they remain in their LC for two years with the same students and teachers. My child is excited about the lockers. Where are they?Each LC has its own hall and within that hall are the lockers. Students are able to place their books and materials there and do not have to carry their backpack throughout the day. Students are able to purchase a locker shelf at local office supply stores or Walgreen's to make more room in their lockers for their belongings. Students do not require a combination lock.What is a "social"?Twice a year, the PTA coordinates with each grade and holds what we call a "student social". This is an opportunity for the entire grade to freely roam the commons and participate in a supervised indoor carnival type atmosphere. There are games, prizes and food. Socials are held in the fall and spring. Each LC asks for donations of specified items based on the LC's booth. This is an excellent opportunity for LC's to mix it up and socialize more than during specials and their staggered lunch and recess times. What is a BOB?A B.O.B. is the acronym for Blue Organizational Binder. This is the binder that travels back and forth, from home to school and helps students stay organized. In this binder, students deliver announcements, newsletters and any information to parents and/or place their homework, notes to teachers, etc for delivery at school. What is the D.O.T.?The DOT is the acronym for Drop Off Table.The DOT is located on the right side of the school lobby.This is where parents may drop off any items the student may need (or forgot). An example might be their instrument or, poster board for a project, or a lunch. Many parents will also purchase lunches from nearby restaurants and drop off at the table (clearly marked with their name) and the student picks up as he/she is dismissed for lunch. If you have any additional questions, please don't hesitate to contact the PTA President or any board member.Missing something? Find it Friday! Found it Friday is Lost and Found...Lost items collected during the quarter are placed on the stage every Friday from 10:30-1:30 during lunch times. If your child is missing an item please have them collect it during lunch on Friday. Our racks and bins are over-flowing! The best chance to recover an item, before it is lost, is to label everything with your child's LC # and full name. PLEASE LABEL. Items not collected by their owners will be donated at the end of each quarter.

Attention all current Mitchell PTA Volunteers please follow the CISD Volunteer Verification link below. Every year, the district initiates criminal history checks on anyone wishing to volunteer in any school or at a school function that may be held off campus. Please fill out this very simple CISD Volunteer Verification and once your application is approved, you and the campus principal will receive a confirmation email. The volunteer list will be verified for all school events such as: PTA activities, End of the Year 6th Grade Celebration, Destination Imagination Coach, LC Park Day, PTA Socials, classroom volunteer, and much more. Mitchell already has hundreds of approved volunteers! Way to go!
